Ghost signs are hand painted messages that have faded on walls.
They usually identified or advertised a business. Some are barely
visible because they've been painted over. Others have taken a beating
from nature’s elements. Painting signs required skill. It
was a respected craft. These men went out there and typeset with
paint and brushes. They were called ‘Sign Writers’.
I find hand-painted advertising esthetically pleasing because it
doesn't clutter our visual field. The message is integrated onto
existing structures. Today there is so much useless ‘street
furniture’ from billboards to columns that block our path
and our view. It’s just loud visual noise.
The ghost sign on this old industrial building still has life to
it. I think signage is rooted in time. In this case their ‘product
catalogue’ is simply painted on their wall. This would never
happen today. |
